weatherstripping question/advice

I have a 71' cutlass convertible thats about to be painted and I'm looking to change all of my weatherstripping. What companies do you all recommend. I rather buy a kit that has everything. I have found a kit on ebay from BAP INC thats $359. The kit from soffseal is $671 and the kit from steele rubber $394..what do you all think? Be honest!!!

Do a search on Brothers Automotive before you buy anything from them. I've used softseal and liked them. I think I've seen threads on Steele products, try the search options on this site to see if you can find any old threads that would help. John

I bought my kit from yearone!!! They offer 10-25% off on weekends depending on the internet link and specials. Came with trunk, doors, roof rail, and adhesive. It was easy to install with a good fit!!!

Soffseal, Metro, and Steel are good choices.
You need to find out exactly which brands will be shipped, as there are some stiff, crappo generic junk there that you want to avoid. Bap's trunk weatherstrip comes to mind. There is also the possibility of bap NOT shipping anything and said they did...

I've personally dealt with Steele Rubber three different times, on both '68's (first time didn't order enough, my fault),and they have been outstanding in product and customer service, which makes up the difference, as far as I'm concerned. On the LongTop, the plastic inserts didn't line up correctly for a '68. They requested that I mark where they should line up on the rubber they had already sent, then asked that I send it back to them postage COD, they reworked their product, and resent the proper one, with perfectly lined up plastic inserts, which they now use for the '68 wagon only. Could not ask for better folks to deal with, and better yet, you actually talk to a real person on the phone!

I would call fusick automotive for the convertable weather stripping. I think they had weather stripping custom made. Give them a call.

I second the warning to avoid Brothers Automotive. I just installed a Steele Rubber header bow seal on my 71, but similar threads seem to have the Metro soft co. as the favorite of most people. Perhaps I'll try them next.

While I have never dealt with weatherstripping on a convertible, I have had my dealings with Metro Moulded Parts.

Here is what I posted over on ROP.

I bought door weatherstrips for my '76 Ninety Eight from Steele and they were terrible. They did fit well and the plastic clips lined up correctly but the ends where they actually mount to the tops of the door are very flimsy and not the same consistency as the seal around the rest of the door. They are almost spongey and started breaking apart after only opening and closing the door a few times.

I ordered another set from Soffseal and they are 100% better. The ends are much more durable and even have some reinforcement where the screws go through.

In Steele's defense, I just spoke with them and they said to pack them up and send them back with an explanation and they will give me a refund/credit. I also purchased the roof rail weatherstrips from them (Soffseal doesn't make them unfortunately) and they are made pretty well. Not nearly as good as OEM, but they will do the job until I find another NOS for the RH.

I bought the complete 68 convertible kit from the ebay seller "adealsap". It was mostly Metro. So far everything has fit although I've only done the vent windows. They are the best deal by far for the money. I paid $330 for everything shipped to my door

Thanks to everyone you contributed to this thread and helping me in my decision. I decided to go metro and I ordered from adealsap on ebay. I still have to find the 8pc window kit (window fuzzies). This is what I ordered:

New 17 piece weatherstrip kit
Fits convertible models only
New weatherstrip kit includes the following items:
Door Seals
A-Pillar Seals
Convertible Top Frame Seal Kit
Rear Quarter Window Seals
U-Jamb Seals
Hood to Cowl Seal
Trunk Seal
Correct moulded ends on the door and roofrail seals.
Door seals have pre-installed plastic clips.
Quarter window seals have steel reinforcements.
Convertible Top Frame Kit includes 6 side pieces and front header seal.

Metro is very good, but the only thing I disliked were the cheapo plastic "push in rivets" that were used at the door ends. They tended to bend at the head or break. I reused my originals. You can also get new ones from the parts store "help" section or from Napa.
The rubber part was great though - that is what counts...

Metro or Soft seal.

I don't know if OER makes foam latex weatherstripping for Olds or not, but if they do DO NOT buy it. This is after just 3 years on my car which sits outdoors. Mind you this cost 2x as much as Metro.......it's a total rip off. Metro is on my car now.

Seriously.....3 years and it looks ancient and dry rotted.

Looking for the window fuzzies (Belt mouldings) I bought a set of them fron Fusick. Excellent service on everything I bought. However, the door belr mouldings were from OER i believe. They were not even close to the right shape and would have needed a bunch of work to make them look decent even if I could reform the shape without distorting them. So, I stopped by Metro Moulded parts on my way home with my origionals so I could match them up.The ones they stock were even further out of shape and I also believe they were too short. I ended up talking to a friend who specializes in restos and he told me about Restoration specialties. They are in Pennsylvania I believe. The parts they sent were about 90-95% correct. Very nice.Good people to deal with, and I think they were even less expensive than the other 2 suppliers. Also, there's a place called Kat Skinz or something like that. My buddy has had good luck woth them as well. I wouldn't go with Metro or Fusick for those belt mouldings/window fuzzies/ or whatever you want to call em. That's my .02

Question Roof Rail seals

Hello to all - have a 1970 Cutalss Supreme Holiday Coupe that needs a little upgrading. One of the things required was roof rail seals. Purchased a set of SofSeal from Fusick and I'm still trying to iron out the installation. The SS's are hollow and there's no moulded-in feature for the transistion from the A pillar to the horizontal run across the top of the side window. Consquently no matter what I do the SS's (which are hollow) collapse in this area when I make the "turn". I've tried them numerous times with no success. Always ends up with a air leak whether I roll the window up later or before closing the door. They also look ugo because of the distortion in the corner. I believe the ones I removed were original - they were solid rubber rather than hollow, and it looked very much like they had been surgically cut at a 45 or whatever and then reconnected to make that corner perfectly. Any feedback would be appreciated.
