It's been about 15 years ago that I changed my hood and hinges so it ain't exactly fresh in my mind. The bolts for the hinges are under the dash and go out into the hinges. So you really need someone under the dash with a socket wrench and someone outside to move the hood.

There are also some special shoulder bolts that are pivot points where the hinge bolts to the hood. They have a two sided head and I got by with an open end wrench. If you want the special socket for those, Fusick has the socket. Make sure the pivots are well lubed and the hinges work freely or you could bend the hood trying to close it.

check the spot welds

im currently working on my 56 olds hood and have noticed the spot welds have popped undone in areas and the metal split alittle which made the hood ride higher..ya might want to look under there to see if that might be the cause..just a thought...good luck

did all this before realizing how old the request for help was...oh well
shows how to make a socket for the hinge bolts.I think the springs get weak after a while...for me, I noticeD one side always wanted to rise before the other but the only way to know exactly is to take the springs off and check the various parts without tension on them.

If you have trouble reading it, increase your zoom on your screen settings.....btw, shouldn't this post be in the vintage section for reference to other '56 olds owners...i donno.
