Body style confusion
Body style confusion
Hey all, been a loooooong time since I've visited. Had a 72 Supreme, restored it, sold it, miss it, etc. I'm kinda rusty on nomenclature, so here is my question. What exactly is difference between hardtop, coupe, hardtop-coupe, ( I know what a convertible is) . I have a left over front door glass from above mentioned car. A guy wants to put it in a 72 Chevelle convertible. As far as I have determined, the Supreme body style would be considered a hard top, and my interchange book says it will fit a Chevelle convertible. Just need some clarification here, thanks Chumley
A coupe is a two door (despite what Mercedes and other German car companies may claim).
A hardtop coupe has no post (no B-pillar)
A sport coupe has a post and frames around the door windows.
All 1970-72 Supreme 2drs with the notchback rooflines are considered hardtops (Fisher Body 4257 code). All 1970-72 A-body front door glass from hardtops and convertibles interchange.

Just to add to Joe's comment, the model 3287 and 3687 also are classified as 2 door coupes. (pillarless) As far as interchange ALL 2 door Cutlass hardtop coupes (aka Holiday Coupes) doors and glass interchange, so whether CS or Cutlass S coupes it's the same animal for doors and glass. Very likely the same glass will interchange with Chev, Pontiac and Buick.
Thanks, there is still some fuzzy areas in my understanding, but from what you both describe I get from it that what I call fastback style ( Cutlass S ) and notchback (Supreme) both will interchange with each other, as well as convertibles and certain other GM A bodies. Sometimes there is too much terminology and repetitive designations in this area of auto manufacturers.
