65 442 vent window restoration

Removed the vent window assembly in preparation for
Rechrome of all the chrome trim. I removed the handle. I want
To remove the glass. I see the two rivets...do you drill theses out in
order to remove the glass? If so, where do you get new rivets and is there a special tool to replace them. I did a search to see if they were avail as repo..guess they aren't. Thanks for any help.

Have you looked on bro442.com in his restoration tips?
I remember reading on the vent glass but not sure if it went into the details your looking for.
I know you can email him he usually responds in a day or two of email sent

After searching many sites I found the answer. it was actually on a GTO forum. The rivets can be removed with a small screw driver by lifting the head up enough to grab with a small vice grip....using counter clockwise motion, the rivet will lift out. The rivets are reused after replacing the glass. I just located this and will attempt to remove tomorrow.

Who are you using to have them re chromed and how much? Sandy's in Syracuse quoted me $325 for the 68 vent's which, I think, is much less to chrome than the 65's.

I haven't taken the pics yet. I will try to do that this weekend. BRO442 wants to post them on his site. I don't know the cost for the rechrome yet. I should know by the end of the week. I am having all the pot metal chrome re-done so I think I am gonna have to get a second job!

I just finished restoring mine on the 64 Pro touring car I'm building, I could not get the rivets to separate so I drilled them out. I think Ames has replacement rivets but I used two small screws, nuts and a little lock tight. I also bought their vent window rubber. As far as re-chroming, maybe I got lucky but I used fine steel wool and patience!

beautiful job! I wanted to replace the vent glass...I am going to try to polish my vent metal as well. I have the frame out to get chromed now. I got lucky I guess with the rivets..they came out with very little difficulty.
