Just wondering if anyone ever seen a pain scheme like this. Also wondering if this could be factory paint job. This is my dad's old car. Dad bought it like this in 73. I just brought it home today. Starting my long time dream build. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also if anybody might remember this car and have info on it that wou alone be appreciated. This car started its life in the Rockford il area. And then moved to Des Moines Ia. Now the car is in Davenport ia area. Car has been parked since approximately 1982. And yes it needs alot of work.
I'm sure if your dad bought it in '73 then it is pretty special to you. No doubt that is a custom paint job apparently done before your Dad got it in '73. So get busy on it...
Yeah...definitely old show car paint, could have been a World of Wheels type car at one time. Is the interior stock? Lots of chrome under the hood? The car could have an interesting history. There are a few Buick GS cars that have recently appeared like that. Sometimes you can find old pics of them with models or Playmates. They are cool cars.
Story I heard was it was custom ordered for a drag strip driver. It was supposed to be a lady driver in Rockford Illinois or maybe Dixon Illinois. She sold to her mechanic and my dad got it from the mechanic. My dad passed away in 2000 I was just 11 years old. So story I heard came from my uncle. No idea on the accuracy of that story but I would love to know more info on the car. Original motor long gone. Has original Hurst his and hers shifter. It's a very cool car but in some desperate need. Inside of car was gotten to by mice and basically all junk.
Thanks for posting pics, that would of looked sharp when new! Hope your going back with the panel paint job. Not everyone will like it but it’s great to preserve history. Your Father would be proud your saving his Olds.
X2 I absolutely agree with that. But, it will be a very costly undertaking unless you have many automotive talents.
I dunno, its been done in lacquer IMHO, with many coats of clear as was the norm, but to me it looks like they added a white panel used the stock color for the accent in the panel, looks like the width of tape to get the fade, if you just used epoxy for the primer, and did the rest in lacquer might not be horrendous cost and lacquer is very forgiving and can be painted easily in the garage . to have it done in modern paints I agree expensive
I agree with you Eddie about the paint. As custom paint goes, it doesn't look real expensive. I kind of was thinking expensive on the whole project, engine, interior, rust... It's the kind of car that gets taken apart and never finished. I have a friend here in MA with a 69 442 'vert, it was his father's car, too. He came home from birth in the car, went to graduation in the car...stuff like that. I met him at a swap meet...hmmm....maybe 1998 or so. We were both looking at the same 442 parts and started talking + became friends. Not really close friends, but would e and run into each other here and there. I had just bought my 69. I drove mine for a summer season, and fixed some stuff and drove it. The next year I had the engine rebuilt, and fixed more stuff and drove it. The 3rd year I spent the whole summer doing the body myself with very little experience. I bought a welder and a rivet puller, I actually got it really nice! But it took a whole summer and I still was driving it sometimes. The 4th year I had it painted, I can't do it, I'm a paraplegic and use crutches. I was willing to try, but the hose and crutches and speed needed, smoothness of gun action? Anyways...more work 5 years, finally done. It's never been off the frame. So, naturally it's never done really, I'm still out and about at swap meets and Olds shows. I see my friend, How's the car coming? Good, took it off the frame. Years and years and years! Gradually, he puts it back together. He works on the body for years. Finally, sends it out for paint. It's coming nice, but 15 years or something. A few more years, an interior some finishing touches, it's close! A year or 2 ago I see him, hey Scott, hows the car coming? "I took it back off the frame, because I didn't think it was good enough for the rest of the car". 22 years and the car is not finished. You know...I love perfection, but that's 22 years he could have been enjoying the car. I know you understand this, your car looks great!!! Sometimes, it's really hard to follow through with your plans. But, I totally understand it if the car has sentimental value.
I kinda had to see the whole car before I passed judgement. I usually like these old 70's paints schemes. Some some as a kid...so i had to recreate it quick.

IF it was a factory 442 I thought it would have mirrors on both doors. You can determine by VIN if car still is wearing tags and titled

Vin does say it's a factory 442 title is in my name. Looked for it for more then 15 years before my mom found it in a pocket of my dad's glasses case. Thought that was really cool. He always had the title with him. And that is another awesome picture! Thank you so much for that! And as for mirrors I think only w30s came with dual sport mirrors. Could be wrong though.
Its going to be fun! I'm learning so much information right now. On a side note anyone know if the hurst dual gate shifter is actually a rare option on one of these cars. Not finding much information on them.
Dual gate shifters were more rare than the standard shifter. I am not sure if figures are available on the percentage that got Dual Gates vs: Standard automatics.
16.7% of 4-4-2s had W26 in 1971. 61.6% had a console, but that also includes 3- and 4-speed manuals as well as automatics and W26-equipped automatics. Numbers are through July 1971 from the GM Heritage Center.

nope,never don't do it.that car has history with you and your dad.man i have an engine that would look so cool if you painted back the way it was.a 70 toro gt 455 with an offy intake with 2 4bbl afb's and some old school mickey thompson finned valve covers.
i have had this engine since the late 80's bought the toro from a buddy,from there it went into a w-31 then a 65 442,then a 78 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup.actually still has the toro oil pan.pulled engine bout 2011 or so and been sitting in my garage since,i have been looking for a body since i pulled it but they are either 10k or total rust buckets.or 10k for a rust bucket.i will have to think about it.i'm getting up in years and my motivation level is waining,i'm actually in iowa my name should give ya an idea where.i also have i think an X exhaust manifold,you would need a Z manifold for the right side.
