which is the better (leakproof )thermostat stock-housing

I have a leaky chrome neck from Taiwan, wanted to swap in stock-cast or alum. one but not sure which one will better if use with Performer manifold.

A few sources would be great

I've never been a fan of the cheapie chrome ones. I have not tried one of the "o" ring types, maybe someone can chime in here! I've had good luck with the stock-cast!!!

For what it's worth, the aluminum ones are cast, too.

I think that the main reason the factory switched from aluminum to iron was to switch to the bent tube with straight hose instead of the pre-formed J-hose. But it's generally accepted that the iron housing seal better, too. Then again, an iron housing might suffer galvanic corrosion with a Performer manifold.

Regardless of which housing you use, make sure the two sealing surfaces are flat.

I threw away the chrome piece of junk that came with the car. I cleaned up the original and stripped it bare. I used a parts store gasket and a little gasket sealer. It hasn’t leaked for about 8 years so far.

I've dealt with a lot of chrome thermostat housing whether they made from Taiwan or other countries, they always leak. No matter how much silicone i use or double gasket, etc...they've always leak. So now i switch to a cast iron type and it hasnt leaked yet.

I have a cheap Taiwan chrome jobbie that don't leak. But the PO put GOBBS of sealer on it. Looks pretty disgusting and will be changed soon.
