70 455 timing and oil pan gasket

70 455 timing and oil pan gasket

Hey folks, Ive looked and cant seem to find any threads on timing cover removal or oil pan removal. Any tips here would be great. I started last night and was able to get most stuff off to change the timing cover gasket, very stuck at trying to remove the power steering pump at the moment, pretty sure I just need to get access to one more bolt to remove it tho.
Any tips would be great

You need to pull the pulley off the power steering pump, usually on most GM stuff. You also need to pull the balancer/damper to remove the timing cover.
I've gotten the best seal on the oil pan by coating the cork with Indian Shellac; it's messy, though.

Leave the PS pulley on the pump. Remove the pump and brackets as an assembly and set it to the side. Don't make this harder than it is. Also, pay CLOSE attention to the spacers between the PS pump brackets and the block. Loosen fastener C, remove the nuts at A and the bolt at B and at D. The bottom rear spacer is between the bracket and the driver side motor mount. This spacer is NOT the same as the ones on the A-body cars or the 1971-up full size cars.

The bottom Pulley is the main thing Im worried about, I did Mark it with a scratch all so I can get it put back on in the same position as I removed it. Worried about this thing not being in time after I put it back together. Any tips on that would be awesome

ALWAYS put the engine on or close to TDC before disassembly! You never know what kind of might-as-wells you will run into. LIKE- if you're regasketing the timing cover, you might as well put a timing set in....

The location of the pulley is irrelevant. It bolts to the balancer in any one of four positions. The balancer is keyed to the crank and only goes on one way.

That is great News Joe, I havent worked on a Carburated vehicle much since the early 90s so my memory is off just a little and My Father will be lending a hand with my son and I between Hockey games. This engine and car is a great History lesson for my 17 year old son and kinda me included. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Picking up my Harmonic Balancer puller tomorrow. Of course every you tube video that ive watched on this has the engine on a stand and the harmonic Balancer is allready removed. lol

OK, se we got everything off, and started to get everything back together. Only problem that we encountered was that we could not lift the engine high enough to slide the oil pan out. The transmission came up and was pressing on the fire wall. so far we have had 2 glitches. Engine not able to be lifted high enough to clear the oil pan and putting the harmonic Balancer back on, but I do understand there is a tool for this and am picking it up this eve to finish the job. Was great to get to work on this with my father and son

I never understood people pulling the oil pan in the car. Even if you get it out, it's a PITA trying to work over the crossmember. Just pull the whole thing and be done.

Not everyone has a shop that is equiped with something to pull the entire engine I guess, I have not really had much of a problem accessing the gasket that remains from the oil pan to clean it off the block, I would think there would be a bigger potential of things going wrong after pulling the entire block out of a 53 year old car rather than just jacking it up a few inches..........

Ummmm - you are trying to replace the oil pan gasket with the engine still in the car? I strongly advise pulling the engine - you can get all the surfaces cleaner and do such a better job

Can be done without pulling engine but a hell of a lot more difficult and frustrating to get a good clean surface on both parts. Total pain in the *** and then it still may leak just because your standing on your head..best to you and hope it all works out well.

got it all buttoned up yesterday morning, so far it all seems fine. certainly was not fun doing the oil pan gasket. Car has about 200 km on it now and no leaks

Good job. I've replaced a 350 oil pan gasket while on jack stands twice & found it was no big deal.
