Hello, I bought a rebuilt 455 long block fairly cheap. Has Speed Pro .030 pistons (L2323- Forged?) As far as I know all stock internals except cam, pistons, oil pump and milodon 7 quart pan.
Can not comfirm for sure but was told it has the Comp Cams Magnum 280. I know little about cams and was wondering what i should expect from this cam. I plan on using aluminum heads and manifold, long tube headers, Power Brakes, Looking for a strong running street car, Power band is listed 2,000-6,000 Im thinking I should be all in by 5,000 rpm with stock bottom end? Thoughts?
That cam is pretty mild for a 455. Stock 455's will rev to almost 6k. Not much past that. Consider a different cam. Talk to Cutlassefi and see what he thinks would work well.

By mild you mean? no muscle car umph, no lope to idle?
I mean just that. May have a slight idle sound but not much. I put that same cam in my son's 362 small block. That had a nice idle. Car will run fine with it but definitely not a muscle car cam in a 455.

Not sure about that ... I have a CC XE262H (which is a step milder than the 280) in my G-block and it has a pretty decent lope and the power band is nudged slightly upward. Definitely more radical than factory -- this is no "RV" cam.
I would think the 280 would be similar only moreso.
I don’t agree that it a good cam for a 455. Very similar to what I have and you can definitely hear it and has all the power I could need with good drive ability.
mine is 228 degrees @ .050” .504” lift on both 108 lsa. Single pattern
It will have a little lope. That grind has been around for at least 30 years. Definitely much better grinds available today.
The grind is 30 years old but the engine platform ended 45 years ago. Someone would have really needed to have something to offer to make a cam profile for an engine platform that went extinct 15 years prior with the current technology of the day. Who was really thinking of truly better cam designs 20+ years later for an even more extinct engine platform.
One thing to consider is your rear gears, tire size etc, if your running mid 3:42 gears with an automatic, then you definitely want a reasonable converter to get the most out of the cam.. a new cam lifter set isn’t that much so change it now if your going to do it to match what you want. To many overcam their engine, then are perplexed why the carb circuit isn’t idling right and on and on
Thanks Guys, This was an old project that was started long ago but never got finished by original owner. The price was too good to pass up, Came with new lifters for the cam. Plan on runnig a T400, maybe 2200 stall converter. Has 3.73 posi in the car now. 28" tall tires on now. Just want a fun car to romp around. Not racing

You have to understand most cam companies do the same grinds for all different engine families, Chevy, Ford, Olds, doesn’t matter whether they’re 50 years old or 20. They’re all the same grind and lobe family.
OP. Run it, you’ll be fine.
