Engine ID

I’m assuming from this stamping that I’ve got a’69 400 “G” block in my car. Definitely not the original engine for this ‘68?

May help explain some things...

That casting number was used in both 1968 and 69. Only the VIN derivative stamp will tell you the exact year of the block.

Thanks Joe. I’ll have to pull the alternator and bracket to locate it on the block.

Or you could run down to your local parts store and rent a borescope..much easier😀

Try a small handheld mirror. Nestle the mirror in next to the generator bracket and shine a flashlight at either the mirror or the area of the VIN derivative. You can generally feel the VIN derivative stamp block with a couple fingers. If you locate it but it's difficult to make out the numbers, direct some PB Blaster spray or brake fluid at the VIN derivative stamping block to better visualize.
