These two Charts show different part numbers for the Primary Rods in a ’70 Toro 7040252 Carburetor. The Olds FAQ Chart says part number 7040701 (52C) and the Carburetor Parts Usage Chart says part number 7034849 (49B). The two tables also differ on the 1970 455 engine 7040251 Carb Primary Rods. Does anyone know which Table is correct? Any 7040252 Toro owners or 7040251 455 owners who have been in their original Carb and know?
Also, does anyone know what book the "Carburetor Parts Usage Chart" comes from?
The foot-thick Rochester Carb info book matches your first chart. The second chart (which came from a Dealer Technical Guild publication, by the way) appears to have the primary rods for '251 and '252 reversed. Typos happen, unfortunately.
Wouldn't dealer bulletins and Guild publications take precedence in regards to accurate info?
Unfortunately, there are obvious typos in all the literature. Having said that, however, I'm now doubting my original post. If you go to the source for that first table, the note that precedes the table says:
Here is a list of the carb #'s, along with the #'s for the jets, primary rods and secondary rods. These are the #'s from the AC-Delco manual, so they are only as accurate as that is. Also beware that I am just copying what is in the book(s); thus any errors or inaccuracies there are here as well."
Yeah, if the table came from the carb manual, it's no surprise that they match.
And, just to add fuel to the fire, here's the Jan 1972 Parts Book, which matches the Service Guild table, not the Rochester Manual. 7040701s in the '250 and '251 and 7034849s in the '252.
In the past week I have taken apart two different 7040252 Carburetors. Here's what I found.
Carb 1 is an new re-manufactured 7040252 carb that appeared to have been sitting on the shelf at an auto parts store for a very long time. I found that it has 7040701 "52C" Primary Rods and 7033655 "AU" Secondary Rods.
Carb 2 is a used 7040252 carb that I purchased from a fellow ClassicOldmobile member. It has been rebuilt at some point in its life , because the plugs on the underside of the body have been epoxied. It also has the 7040701 "52C" Primary Rods and 7033655 "AU" Secondary Rods.
FWIW, both of these carbs match the information on the Olds FAQ Chart, not the Dealer Tech Guild Chart
Ugh. So to summarize, the list from the FAQ matches the Rochester manual, which matches two actual '252 carbs, both of which have been open before (though admittedly it's unlikely that someone swapped those rods during a rebuild).
The Dealer Service Bulletin matches the Olds Parts book.
