Has anyone else notice that on 98 & 88 455's from 68 to 72 sometimes have cast iron pulleys ? We have noticed that almost everyone of these engines have damaged/worn out thrust bearing surfaces where metal has transferred from the crank to the thrust bearing and along with embedded hard carbon have worn out the crank? You grab the front of the crank or use a tire iron and there is like 0.125" play or even more on the crank. So watch out for engines with the cast iron pulley's, they are heavy and slam the crank against the thrust bearing a lot harder than the pressed steel ones.

Thanks Ray, but I'm running an aluminum reduction pulley set, and an ATI Harmonic balancer. I have run this engine for almost 14 years without this kind of damage. I've also had the same TH400 trans all those years and the same Cone converter!! But I'm happy to get any replies because one of them could hit on my problem.

The material has nothing to do with it. It’s either a balance problem or there is something “pulling” the crank against the thrust. It doesn’t just happen by itself.
