Y'all are great!

In the short time I have been a member here I have already noticed that ya'll really are a great bunch. Some of you know more about these engines than I could have ever thought of. Y'all do have day jobs, right?

Stupid me pulled all the plug wires off my distributor because I wanted to do some degreasing and cleaning. Well, now I can't figure out where plug #1 goes. First I made darn sure it was at TDC by turning the balancer by hand and using the "wood dowel in #1 spark plug hole" method. Standing in front of the engine, the rotor is pointing halfway between directly at me, and directly to my right. Meaning, with the cap on the darn rotor is pointing almost directly in between two terminals. So I can't figure out which terminal on the cap is #1. The distributor shaft index mark is lined up with the block mark. So I can either advance it a bit or retard it a bit to get the rotor pointing directly at a terminal. My neighbor took one glance at the distributor off and said whoever put it on last "missed a couple teeth"????

It runs like crap right now anyway. Timing chain is floppy, carb is off for a rebuild and my valve seals need replacing big time. Little smokey. It's all on my to do list!

Appreciate any help guys!

Don't despair, you will get it. The loose timing chain can contribute to the distributor slop and difficulty getting the timing dead on.

Welcome.
Day job?
The day job here is to be on Classic Olds all day at work.
We're Renaissance men here so this is also a gourmet food enthusiast site, if you consider vegamite, chopped chicken liver and bacon gourmet food.
Our token girl Sandy can't be a Renaissance man because she's a girl.

The #1 distributor terminal is between the #2 and #8 terminals.
