What's a 425 385HP Toro Engine worth?

Really depends on the condition. Sounds like it's not running by your comment "turns over". Without knowing whether anything is salvage able, it's a crap shoot. The most valuable thing in that engine is the steel crank, but it's 50 years old. Who knows if it's still usable. Same goes for the heads and block. Most likely it has "C" casting heads, which are pretty desirable. It's still a gamble. I have purchased 4 core 455 engines that were all $150 - $250. Two of them had go fast goodies with them, so hopefully that will give you an idea about fair core pricing. Remember it's a gamble and scrap prices are way down right now. If you know the guy, tell him you would like to tear it down and inspect everything and have your machine shop check for cracks and damage. Turning over really doesn't mean too much. If he's unwilling to allow you to thoroughly check it out, just low ball him with an offer of money that you would be compfortable with losing.
Hope this helps. Good luck, Dave - The Freak

Big valve B or C heads
I'd say as much as $1000 for the best BB Olds produced. Then again, I am more on the seller side, not the buyer side, so divide that by 3 to 5 for the buyer's perspective.
Pull it apart and assess the condition. Crank 50 yrs old means nothing other than more chance to be abused. There are 100+ year old cars still running. One can abuse and wreck a one week old engine.
