In what order do the wires go on dist cap?

Plugs and wires were already off when I bought the car just trying to put new plugs and wires on it, 455 rocket. Just wanted to know in what order do the wires go on the cap.

Same as the order cast into the intake manifold.

I don't remember it, because I always look at the intake manifold (but I know Joe does...).

It turns counterclockwise.

Every red blooded American boy should know those numbers by heart.
I have since since before I could walk.
The password in war should be "Tell me the GM V8 firing order or I'll shoot!".

I have two girls but if my wife ever had a boy his name was going to be 18436572 Wolf.

Maybe distributer was not put in right, bring #1 piston up on TDC compression stroke and make sure rotor is pointing to "1 plug wire on dist cap

Get cylinder #1 to tdc and set your #1 on the cap where the rotor is pointing to. If you had your dist. out your possibly 180 deg's out!

I'm glad to see that you guys finally have the firing order memorized.

Backfiring usually indicates that the timing is way off. As noted, get the #1 cylinder (driver's side front) to TDC on the compression stroke, look at where the rotor is pointed relative to the distributor cap, start with the #1 plug wire on that tower, and go CCW from there. The exact location of #1 on the cap doesn't matter, just that the rotor points to it when that cylinder is on compression.

When I first put my 66 back together I spent hours pulling my hair out trying to get it to run with 18436572 clockwise It was my first Olds motor to work on.

Yeah I knew the v8 order pretty early, but before that I knew the 153624 for the 6cyl Chevys.

Yes - I did the same thing - I was out about 1/8 of a turn on the distributer which put the timing way off and caused the backfire.

If you want to get ****, the chassis service manual has a diagram of exactly where the wires go into the cap.
