Water pump

I Installed a water pump off an 84 307 onto a 76 455 with no problems until i put tried to fill the radiator. Coolant was flowing out of a 1/4" hole on the shaft near the base of the water pump, and i don't understand why. I don't recall that hole being plugged or leaking when i removed it from the 307. Does anyone how why it's leaking. I guess i should just replace it,,,since its leaking? Possibly a bad seal that dried out? Thanks

Hi,

If its leaking from the hole on the snout near the shaft, it's like you stated, bad seal on the shaft, either dried out from sitting on the shelf too long or improperly installed.

Make sure its actually coming from the hole as it could be runnoff from spilling or another leak point.

If you have a radiator pressure tool, parts store might rent it, pressurize the system after you dry off all the fluid and see what happens.

Good luck, I went thru 6 new waterpumps over the course of a summer on a Buick Nailhead, all dried out seals from sitting, guessing I went thru their inventory

Regards,
