VIN # location on block

I forget where the pad on the block with the unit # is located on big blocks. Is it in the same location as small blocks? Trying to determine if a car for sale is numbers matching. Thanks, Chumley

Yup. Same location just below #1 spark plug.

here's a simple yet possibly overlooked ID thing. check the oil fill tube, the first # is the year of manufacture. i think there is like eight #'s in a sequence. sometimes they are facing backwards, or dirty and it's hard to read them. possibly won't help because the fill tube might of be removed/replaced.

Which is exactly why we have "overlooked" this intentionally.

quit trollin', just tryin' to help a dude out. it says numbers matching, so the tube should say 8 or 9, if it says 1 then it isn't from a '68 or 9.

The fact that the number on the oil fill tube shows the correct year doesn't contribute anything to a "numbers matching" claim, because it doesn't match any other number on the car. The VIN derivative on the block is the only number if concern to verify numbers matching for that year. One could have a numbers matching block with a switched oil fill tube.
