Starting issues

Hello all,

Let me start off by saying the car starts fine but It's the sound that it makes when it's starting. When I turn the key it's almost like theres a clanking noise. It always starts but it's just the horrendous noise that I hear while it's trying to start. It's a 1972 Olds 455 by the way.
I disconnected the distributor wire and attempted to start it and the sound went away. It's a brand new distributor with the gear and everything. Could this be causing my problem?

Did you check the ignition timing?
