Rocket engine/tranny saved from the Junk man
Rocket engine/tranny saved from the Junk man
I was at the local metal recycler the other day and saved an Olds Rocket engine with cast iron transmission. We got CFD75 off the bell housing, and 563966 off the intake manifold, back left. To me it looks early 50'ish. Don't know much about car engines.
firing order is 18736542 Left bank is #1 from looking from behind.
My Question is what size is it, when was it made, and what does the car look like it came from.
Thanks!
Tom

Casting numbers. No use to me.
On the right side of the trans, there should be an oval (?) metal tag, with Hydra-Matic, above a stamped letter/number combo.
R54-xxxx would be a '54 Olds trans. It will also tell us where to look for the engine number.

I'll try a couple pictures. As I said earlier I don't know much about cars. I am into old tractors, gas engines, snowmobiles ect., just thought this looked to neat to get melted down.

Can anyone tell me about what year this is, what car it may be out of, and any other information that might be known about it?
Many thanks!

It appears to be 54-56 but I don't have anything to reference the numbers. If the batwing aircleaner is not pitted too bad it will be worth you efforts of hauling this thing home. They are very sought after.
'52-'56 (and up) Air Cleaner. Not very efficient.
'54-'56 rocker covers.
'49-'60 fuel/vacuum pump.
'49-'55 (and most '56) single exhaust.
'52-up Trans dipstick tube.
From what little is shown of the trans, it appears to be a '54-'55 (and '56 Eighty- Eight only) “slant pan” Hydra-Matic. Could also be an optical illusion.
'49-'55 distributor.
All '54-'56 were 324, and the engine number began with a “V”.
Based on my doubt that anyone would replace a '56 distributor, with an earlier version, I am confident that it is not a '56, but, most likely, a '54 or '55.

Thanks for all the inormation fellas! I think I'll put it in the back of the the shed and forget about it for a few years.
If someone really needed it I could probably be talked out of it before I put it away. Also thought about ebaying the air cleaner but I think I'll keep it all together right now.
Thanks again!

Glad you saved it. I think you ought to sell the air cleaner to Oldsguy since it would go to very good use. Just think about some part you look for one of those old tractors and how much they mean when you find one. It would be perfect for his 46 project. If you put it in the back of the shed it is going to rust and then it won't do anybody any good. Go ahead, make his day.
