rear main oil seal

I have a1967 400 engine un-touched, 62,234 miles on my car. The rear seal leaks. I know it is a rope seal but would like to change it to a lip type seal. I, ve heard that a pontiac seal will work. Anyone know for sure? Thanks for any information. friskyjake. OH, the trans is a munice 20.

Ford 460 seal works great. Get one made out of Viton if possible.

Did 67 use a nylon timing gear? 60K miles is getting up into that range.

Time for chain, gears, and water pump, too.
Don't believe you can put a solid seal in while motors in the car - a rope is a REAL PIA!
Then you get into the real MAW's - [might as well's] !!!
Pull the motor and make it easier!

Thanks guys. I had planned on pulling the motor, which will be a real PIA since the car also has A/C. but I hate oil drips. Does the ford 460 seal need any other work done to it? Some seals have little nubbings on then.

Yes, they need to be trimmed.
