quadrajet help

i just purchased a 1966 toronado, I had trouble identifying the carb, as it has no numbers. now my problem is that the throttle body seems wider than the mounting surface of the intake and I am getting a vacuum leak. is there a differance in the throttle body width? and is there an adaptor I can get if there is.

I have a 67 cutlass with a quad that i also thought had no numbers. Look closely on the drivers side as they may be stamped in an up & down order. They are really hard to see. Most quads will start with the number 70 but not all of them as in some years the 70 was dropped before the other numbers. For you to do proper research on the carb you need to add the number 70 in front of the stamped number for any auto or carb places to be able to help you. Good luck...

Is it a Quadrajet or something else? As atated, Q-jets have the number stamped vertically on the flat surface drivers side back by the secondaries. As far as I ever heard, all Q-jets have the same width base and mount the same.

Except for 1965 and '66 (and maybe early '67) units have it stamped in a circle onto an embedded round metal tag.

I agree, I've never heard of any variation in throttle body mounting dimensions.

Pictures would help.

Is it the stock manifold, or aftermarket?
Cast or aluminium?

stock toronado manifold, I think it may have the wrong base gasket on it I will pull the carb this afternoon. The carb must be a shop replacment as there is no tag no numbers.

As bad as that heat passage is burnt on the outside, I'd guess the gasket is burned out.
There's a 3/8" thick gasket that'd help a lot in your application.

that's an interesting specimen you have there, no numbers on the bowl-could be a replacement bowl. the air horn is also not original as there is no secondary air valve dampener assembly, not even the boss for the mount behind the driver's side secondary air valve flap. it looks like they replaced both pieces as part of the "patty melt" recall.

what are the symptoms you're experiencing?

Just a thought- you can probably get the correct carb for your car and engine.

But, the carb you have may work fine as long as your base gasket is correct. Pix of what you think the problem is would help. "wider base" is confusing... I have not run into that.

sorry to be vauge it was the base gasket, what was on there was wrong, however now I think it is leaking from the plugs, it is hard to start, but once started it is fine. I am starting my forum search now to determine correct epoxy to use, if anyone knows I am willing to listen.

If you're talking about the well plugs, almost any two-part epoxy will work, just make sure the surface is clean!
JB Weld has worked for me.

jb weld is the best, the others generally don't last that long. clean and roughen the surfaces, you need to create a surface the jb weld can hold on to.
