Q - Pilot Bearing BCA 7109

My '71 W-30 has a BCA 7109 Pilot Bearing, the existing has been in the car since 1985 with no issues. I have had the engine rebuilt and a new 4sp from Auto Gear.
This has been somewhere around a year and a half ordeal, it is what it is. Next up is to run a dial indicator for bell housing alignment.
My question is about the Pilot Bearing (it has been a while since all was removed), the bearing has one side covered so you cannot see the ball bearings, the opposite side is open,
Does the open side face the crank? also I don't remember if we (dad and I) put any grease on the ball bearings, should there be any?

I assume your replacing it, yes after installing open bearing side goes toward engine, I put a grease gun squirt or so behind it before sticking trans back in. Little lube between bearinf]g and crank in that cavity.

That was my thought "open side" to crank and add a bit of lube. Yes, a new bearing.
Thank you Andy for the reply.
