Pilot bearing

Anybody know, on a factory pilot bearing, do I pack the bearing with grease? Olds manual says clean the grease reservoir before installing the new. The bearing is open on one side, which faces the reservoir! Factory milled crank opening!

Of course, 1966 400, muncie. The crank is factory drilled, it's not a converta crank. I'm using a national bearing, exposed raceway on one side, sealed opposite.

I always put some grease on the open side of the bearing and put that end in 1st with the sealed side out towards the trans.

Cleaning out the old grease makes sense because grease in the reservoir could prevent the new bearing from fully seating or get pushed into the new bearing and grease.

After cleaning it out I'd install it the way Oldsmaniac said.

Good luck!!!

My next dilemma, should I use a light body grease? I'm assuming the grease would flow into the bearing during acceleration to keep it from starving for longevity, hence the reservoir.
