are the new edelbrock head pushrod holes work on a 1965 A engine or do they have to be machined . are there any other modifications needed to make them work

If using 3/8 pushrod it's possible to hit at the bottom of the holes. Regardless of heads used any 65 BBO using B block and early E castings should check for interference at the deck.

Place the head on the block and try the pushrod with the rocker installed. If it interferes or is close take the head off and drill out the pushrod holes. Went through a number of drill bits doing this to an E head for a 66 45 degree block.

I don't think they will. I have used Gen2 with 45 degree blocks and 3/8. I moved the holes towards the deck about .110 (one hundred and ten thousandths). Call a reputable shop that knows the difference between the 39 and 45 blocks and have them do it
