Power Steering Belt Question
Power Steering Belt Question
Looking for some help. So, I'm finishing up my motor on my 1970 442. My car has power steering and no AC. All the pulleys and brackets are original. I bought reproduction Thornton belts from Fusick. The alternator belt fits fine. The power steering belt isn't long enough (399594) even though the belt is for power steering and no AC. On Fusick's website, the power steering belt number 399595 says power steering with AC OR heavy-duty cooling. Doing some quick research, it's also a longer belt by a few inches. I don't know if my car came with HD cooling because when I got the car, it was mostly disassembled, did not come with a radiator or a top plate. It did come with a 4-blade fan with a spacer and a fan shroud that was not attached to the car. So now I'm assuming that my car came with HD cooling. Am I correct in assuming this? If I'm not correct, what could I be missing? Thanks!
Not sure if this will help you or not ?

Almost looks like 3935421 is what you need ?
Personally I would put the adjustment at mid range and run a string around the pulleys to get an approximate size. Then go to the parts store and buy that size and see how it fits. They will almost always let you return it for a slightly different length if thats what you need.

What are the actual P/Ns on the pulleys? Unless you bought the car brand new, how do you know the pulleys are original? Did you loosen all three fasteners on the PS pump so it slides all the way inboard?
I've run into the same "power steering belt is too short" situation on our cars a few times.
I think Thornton spec'd the wrong size belt and they probably have plenty of inventory.
I've put their power steering belts on ('70-72 442 455 cars) and always had to jam the pump inwards as far as possible to get the belt on. Then, once installed, the pump barely moves back outboard. Belt was made too short.
