PCV valve question

Is it OK to use a PCV in a horizontal position? I am using finned alum. valve covers, and it looks like the PCV sticks too far into the cover, as well as not having a baffle. To look cleaner, I was going to use a piece of bent tubing out of the cover, and run the PCV in the hose on it's way to the carb. Will it seal OK in this position?

How will you get the rubber hose to seal properly on the PCV valve? The hose end of the PCV valve fits a vacuum hose, but the bottom end is oversized to fit in the valve cover.

The PCV valve that went to the intake manifold on the 1970-72 W30s was horizontal. No, it doesn't matter.

Additionally, 69 H/O started that trend for horizontal use on Oldses. Also used on 70 through 72 on all OAI 455, and manual transmission 455 without OAI for Cutlass/442. 70-71 W-30 were the only aluminum intakes with the pipe provision in front of the carb, the rest were cast iron.

Perfect! Thank you, guys! Especially for the pic of the W-30 set-up, Joe! I will even use that elbow off the valve cover. I planned on using 1/2" SS tubing going into the valve cover, with a generic grommet. Make 2 or 3 slits in it, part-way, and weld in some "baffles". Then the rubber, PCV, and rubber to attach to the carb.

Note that the correct PCV valve has hose barb fittings at both ends.

I did about the same as you were thinking of doing except it's all on the intake. The aluminum deck is a little thin to support the PCV tube, so I added a thick aluminum spacer and epoxied it together. The tube is 1/2" OD hydraulic tube with a ferrule soldered at the end to provide grip for the elbow.

I didn't weld anything to the underside to keep out oil splash. Instead I did what the factory did--the turkey tray. I trimmed just enough of the ports so that it fit tightly into the area below the intake (I used sealant between head and intake instead).

You could get the 90 degree elbow, it was GM p/n 405144. I know it's available aftermarket. The steel nipple was 1.25" long with a p/n of 405143. The PCV valve as Joe mentioned, is ACDelco CV-679C, GM p/n 6421972, which basically fits nearly all the Olds V8 engines with closed PCV systems up through 1979. Put the right one in.
