Exclamation Olds 455 Flexplate Help!!!

Hey guys, we are trying to bolt up our Olds 455 with our transmission but is there a way to "clock" the flexplate to the crank shaft? Its externally balanced obviously, and we see the "chunk" in the crankshaft. But does it matter? Thanks!

Jolly, the holes are not evenly spaced. If you set the flexplate against the end of the crank you can rotate it around and see there's only one place where all the holes line up.

I've not see you post in a while. It sounds like your putting things together right now, how is your project going?

Just asking. When you are bolting up the flex plate are you seeing the counter weight? You need to.

Indeed it has to be right way around and there are two different patterns- 1968+ vs 1967 & back.

Look for the ghost print of the crank notch on your plate for it will guide you to the correct orientation

Hey 2Blu! I know its been forever! The project is moving along but I hadn't posted pics in a long time. I need to get caught up on here! PS, you're a lifesaver. We got that part all bolted up, but the problem we are stuck at now is that the motor mounts won't let the engine mount up. I am using the original frame mounts but the ones I see online have a notch cut out for the rubber flaps at the top. I had a 455 in the car before, I don't understand the issue. I am using stock replacement engine mounts.

Mike, I CAN see the counterweight, than you very much!

There have been a few members comment on motor mounts that don't fit. The guru's here suspect its poor quality in manufacturing the parts we're getting from overseas. You can try loosening the bolts that hold it to the engine to see if that gives enough movement to attach the long bolts to the frame pads. Another suggestion is to drill out the bolt holes to an oversize to allow more movement in aligning the bolts.

When you have time give us an update on what all you've done to your car and where you are in the process! John

:-) some days are like that.
Fixed it

Motor mounts- in my experience the mismatch is on the order on an inch or so.

One day this got me.
I ended up measuring the frame pads center to center where the thru bolt goes. Now how to measure the motor? The oil pan is in the way.

I hung plumb lines [string and a heavy nut] off the motor mount holes and then measured between strings.

Then went and bought the right mounts.

This was before we had Joe P to gather info from.
This was BEFORE THE INTERNET.

Hmmm how kind of you to point that out

:-(

Not as old as dirt, but close

My wife is old
but she counters that I am still older
but I proved that she is aging faster than I am.

ha ha ha

It's a slow day Chris so I'll bite. How did you prove the princess is aging faster.

That's easy. YOU'RE causing it (I'm assuming you're drives in the Olds haven't been approaching the speed of light).

The question we want to know is why would you even go there? You have death wish or something?

No, the dynamics of our relathionship allow this sort of banter. she can always fall back on "but you are still OLDER" of course.

The reasoning goes like this
She is about 2y younger than I am.
Therefore, at some point she was about 2 and I was about 4 and I was TWICE as old as her. But, nowadays the difference is more like she is 96% of my age. Therefore she must be aging faster to have caught up from 50% my age to 96% my age.

QED !
