Olds 425 exhaust question

Hello everybody,

I recently have 2 flowmaster mufflers installed and I like the sound, but it just doesn't sound as aggressive as I want it to be.

At idle it does not sound deep at all, especially from the side of the car. It makes a ticking sound and not a deep rumble (which I want).

You can see/hear it here:

For reference I found a video from a Cutlass owner. He has a 425 Olds aswell, but his exhaust sounds deep and aggressive.

You can see/hear it here:

What do I need to change to come close to his exhaust sound?

Can it be the cam, the headers, the exhaust diameter or something else?

Mine specs:
Oldsmobile 425 engine with bigger cam (don't know specs)
Stock manifolds
2.25 inch dual stainless steel exhaust straight to rear (no bends, under axle)
2x flowmaster original 40 series (stainless steel)

His specs (as far as I can tell):
Oldsmobile 425 engine with bigger cam (don't know specs)
Headers
3 inch dual exhaust (bend over axle)
2x flowmaster (40 series I think)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you and regards,

Robert

Sounds like the Cutlass has a bit more engine than you do. That will effect the exhaust note.

Simplest thing is to remove the tail pipes and put turndowns on your mufflers. Pipes to the rear bumper help tone it down. Even stock mufflers will give a deep tone with turndowns under the vehicle. The downside is the interior of the vehicle will become a resonance chamber and it may drive you insane.

I am not advocating doing this; I am merely pointing it out as a possibility. I briefly had my car this way and I couldn't stand how loud it was inside so I put tailpipes back on.

What would be a good starting point to get a bit more engine?

What would the benefits be if I change my entire exhaust system from 2.25 inch to 2.5 inch and replace my manifolds with headers?
Should I add an x or h pipe?

I had the dumps with turndowns, but I didn't like the sound. I prefer tailpipes.

Headers will make a world of difference.

If you want aggressive may I suggest the flowtech purple hornies I have headers so they are loud already but they have a nice deep rumble while driving and when idling you best believe they wake the neighbors

Stainless exhaust systems tend to sing/ring/ping a bit more than mild steel.
