need help with engine id of 1968 442 400ci

i am trying to find a 400 ci engine for my old cutlass 442. i think i have one the guy says it is the original engine but the numbers are not seeming to add up. i do not know much about these cars so i am asking you guys for help. he says it is the original engine that is in his 1968 442 cutlass 400 ci. numbers are as follows. ENGINE NUMBERS:F BLOCK,CASTING #396021F, and head which i could not match with anything are HEAD # C,CASTING 394646. he is trying to charge me 1000.00 for core engine and trans but the numbers seemed to match a 455. if anyone can help can you email me at zackstovall@aol.com. thanks. also if this is not the correct engine could anyone give me any tips where i can find the correct engine for my car? i have a 1968 cutlass 442 with a 455 and would like to make the car original again. thanks

The C heads are correct (they were used on virtually all big blocks for 67-69 but the block casting number you gave is for a 455. No 455s were factory installed in a 442 in 1968 (the Hurst/Olds got a 455, but not the 442). The correct casting for a 68 400 motor is 396026 G.

400 correct engine

it sounds like the block is too late for a 400 and the heads sound to me like
69 455. sight unseen look for original copper color paint. (not gold) red will de
finitely kill the 400.
