A friend of mine was searching craigslist for 472/500 caddy motors and he found one of each for 250 and the same guy was selling an olds 455 for 100 and it still turned over easy, he said it ran but pretty bad because of the carb(not included) I decided I might as well while. It was thrown in the truck first and I didn't inspect it much I just saw it was red and it was labeled 455, although the guy who went to pick up the engines with me said that the valve covers made him think buick....the seed of doubt is planted. I was pretty excited before he said that because to the best of my knowledge if it was red and it was a 455 and it was an olds then it was 68-69 (I believe thats what I read) then the guy said it was a stage 2...again making me think buick but he didn't really know what he was talking about. The second we got back I looked up the casting numbers in a search engine with no olds/buick bias and found that it was a 1971-1972 buick 455, after reading up on the stage 2s I found it was a fairly rare motor especially for the price, but then I looked for the stage 2 characteristics, none of which were present. I feel like the motor was worth what I paid but certainly not what I was looking for. Is a buick 455 (1971-1972) worth about the same as an olds (1968-1970) 455? Pretty soon I will probably post locally for a sale or trade and start looking for the olds again.

Well I just figured I might try here first rather than to join a buick forum for one question and to have them ask why not an olds forum. I just don't know the value of the two matched to eachother you know?

Probably about the same value. However, I don't know how much trouble you will have rebuilding the buick, they may be more difficult to do than an Oldsmobile engine. Good luck though. You probably didn't go wrong for the money.

There is no way a Buick motor is worth as much as an Olds motor. Take that thing to the piers and you might get $10 for it as a boat anchor for a bass boat.

Hey I have never owned a buick but I consider them as close to olds as they come, chevy...no, caddy...no, pontiac...no... But hey don't get me wrong i didn't get a le sabre for more than one reason. Regardless I (unlike some of my friends) do not like to frankenstien cars anyways. I know a friend itching to get a regal so I think I might have him get an olds and trade me or something of that sort

You'll lose horsepower the same as the difference between a 70 and 71 olds 455. Big loss of HP after 1970. Really no comparison.

The "big loss" of HP from 1970 to 1971 was mainly due to the change from gross to net HP rating methods. There was some loss due to the lower compression, but on the order of 20-30 HP when the rating method was the same (gross-to-gross).
