The MAW's got me..........
The MAW's got me..........
I pulled the motor out of my L69 so I could detail the engine bay and paint the motor, as one of the prior owners had painted it RED.....OMG. Once I had it on the stand, I thought MAW pull the pan and check the bearings...... not a pretty sight. I have attached a pic of the rear main bearing and #7 rod bearing. Lots of scoring and some pitting. The motor ran great prior to pulling, and had decent Oil Pressure (45-50 cold, 30-40 hot). The journals have some scoring as well. The motor has been open at some time prior as the rod caps have the numbers peened on them, and the crank has .010 painted on the 1st counterweight. Time for new bearings?
(Then the MAW's really begin.............Arghhhhhhhh)

same here brother...took my engine out to do a cleaning/painting and was surprised at what i found with bearings...i guess its a good thing i did, it just reinforces the ''never assume anything'' when dealing with an engine untill you actually look at it
I betcha it ran great and didn't knock. and probably would stayed that way. the rule of thumb should be "don't open a motor up unless your ready to spend 1000 bucks"

don't tell anybody over on ROP, but i'm going to do a-little test run on bearings, I going to assume the bearings got schorched on initial start up and ran fine for the rest of the time. since the crank only touches the bearings on initial startup "theroryletically" I took 220 sand paper and smoothed out the bearings and i'm going to install them, mains and rods, I'm going to build a test run stand and cold start it for about 2 months and rev the **** out of it. I wont be out any money unless I spin a bearing. I want to know how tuff bearings are.
