lifter resurfacing?

Im thinking about having my original GM 0.921 lifters resurfaced? Anyone ever done this. Im hearing a lifter tap that i didnt hear before, havnt really checked it out yet. I dont hear any rocker noise, im just not sure about 0.921 lifters as no GM's are available. I got them from Cutlassefi Mark, i think their Johnson Hi lift. I will check directly with Mark about this also.
Thanks
Steve

Lifters are nitrided, typically a few thousands deep. If you surface them, you will likely lose that hard layer.

There are companies that perform this service. How long have those lifters been in the car?

Schneider Cams resurfaces lifters for $5 each as I recall. I found it online. I have a set of good lifters acquired in a parts swap but there is some specks of rest on the faces. Can't use them that way.

Maybe I'm missing something but, why not replace them with new ones? I know the .921 lifters were hard to get a while back but they are available now.

.921 lifters

Most are $300 a set which is $18.75 each. Chinese ones are little cheaper ($250)but darn questionable. Nos are far and few between. Believe cutlassefi sells them. Johnson-topline hylift are back to macking them? .842 cheap as sbc stuff. When re-surfaced would think they'd be re-hardened. Have heard of 3 or 4 places that were supposed to redo them.

The lifters in my motor are new...ish. I built it a couple of years ago, just havnt driven it yet. Started it the other day and had what sounds like a stuck lifter that i didnt hear before. I havent really investigated it yet but will soon. I think they are the Johnson lifters, i bought from Mark a couple of years ago. Cam lifters and springs. Other wise the motor sounds great, bottom end sounds quiet, great oil pressure, and it will warm up and idle at 180 degrees all day. Throttle is very responsive. I just hope its nothing major. I did talk to Mark "cutlassefi" today.

I don't understand how you think that re-surfacing lifters would help with a noisy lifter .
Lifter re-surfacing is done ONLY in conjunction with a new or re-ground camshaft . You are re-surfacing the bottom of the lifter where it contacts the cam .
Lifter noise is caused by the inner plunger sticking inside the lifter body .

Are you sure that the noise you hear really IS a lifter ? A lot of times , things like bad fuel pump rods , loose timing chains , leaking exhaust header or manifolds , etc, will sound like a bad lifter .
Make sure it is a lifter , and which one it is , before deciding what to do .
If it is a lifter , they can be replaced one at a time . But be sure to follow camshaft break in procedures when using a new lifter on a used cam .
