Hey all
I'm stuffing a 455 (currently being rebuilt) in a studebaker goldenhawk and the clearance for carb (Qjet) and air filter is gonna be tight under the hood.

I've been looking at ebay aluminum intake manifolds. They claim that " Features low-rise design to reduce overall height by 30%-35% vs standard manifolds" But, looking at the pictures, they look taller than my stock manifold. Id sure appreciate a bit of schoolin' here!

Without knowing the one on eBay you're looking at, hard to help out. I suggest looking at the factory intake for the Toronado. The carb sits in a 'valley' for same reason you need, I picked one up to use with a shaker hood on a TA.

 

I believe I would try an early (1966-70) Toronado intake manifold.

 

The intake you linked appears to have a square bore flange and you said you have a QJet, so the carb won’t fit without an adapter which will raise the carb an inch or so.

 

That chinesium intake on ebay is apparently a clone of a Torker and is anything but "low rise". As Ralph noted, get an early Toro intake, which has a depressed carb flange.

 

The carb flange on the early Toronado intake manifold is 1.28" lower than the common 455 Cutlass manifold.

Measure to see if that is enough to give you proper clearance.

 

Thanks everyone, that's helpful and I'll definitely be looking for an eary Toro intake manifold. Looks like it needs to be gen one, in the 1960's? Joe, I saw that one on ebay that you included a pic of.

I think someone cast an aluminum version of the Toro manifold for motor home use. I have a Toro manifold in my garage but its on the engine and I would have to remove it. Not too much trouble.
The regular cast manifold weighs around 65 lbs and shipping would be a killer. LMK

 

Yeah, when you care enough to spend the very most. FYI, the GMC motorhome community is not price-sensitive. Notice, by the way, that they don't tell you the price, only the $25 "deposit". They don't stock these, they hold a bunch of deposits until they get enough orders for a run of castings. At that point it's "market pricing", plus tariffs, since these are not, um, locally sourced.

I was given one of these chinese intakes, and it looks like it's a copy of the Offenhauser Port-O-Sonic. From the bolts you can't get a wrench on to the odd N2O port on the back, it was a pain. Super unsuitable in both clearance and performance.

 

Hard to say without having one to look at but it almost looks like you could get an Edelbrock 2151 Performer and mill the carb flange down almost flat like Toronado manifold.

 

Okay, well that sure makes my decision easy! Thanks for the solid information. It will be a few months before I get the motor back and then in the studebaker on modified motor mounts to measure my exact clearance.

 

I have an intake thats on a 66 425 out of a Toro if interested. I'm in South Texas.

 

If you decide to go with a Toronado intake I'd encourage you to create a parts wanted post. Also include your location or a nearby big city. There should be several members here with extra intakes. Hopefully one will be close to you. John
