know it would be better ways to block of , but only want to talk about this way.
anybody?

No need to be humble, you are correct.
The thickness and compressibility of the fiber gaskets accommodates the thickness of the steel shims. The stock steel gasket will not.
I also have no idea why one would pay Lynn Wilfringer $35 for these. You can make them for free from scrap you probably have lying around the house. Galvenized steel (not aluminum) flashing comes to mind.

IMO these don't last and can start to rattle just like the iron plugs (if they are not welded in). If you have an iron intake weld the iron plugs into it. Trim them and recess them up into the crossover a bit and weld them up. Recess enough so you don't encroach on the intake gasket surface on the intake. Did mine 10 years ago. Still running strong, zero paint burn, zero carb boiling. I chose this route rather then installing them into the heads. Rather risk trashing the intake over the heads. Don't forget to remove the heat stove flap in the D side exhaust manifold and weld up the shaft holes...if you're still running OEM ex-manifolds. The choke will need a tweak too.
