fuel pump

I'm ready to round-can the electric fuel pump set-up on my Olds, I want the simplicity of a mechanical pump. Since I'm running Edelbrock heads on this car, an aftermarket Robbmc pump is out of the question. I'm leaning towards a Airtex 40736 pump (OEM part # for the Toronado or W-30 442 engine). Can anyone in readerland tell me of another high capacity fuel pump that will clear the Edelbrock heads? Anybody in readerland know of any cars running good numbers with this pump? Its taken a long time to get this car to run the numbers it does, I'm not really interested in slowing it down, but I don't trust the electric pump (especially with the wife driving and/or the kids in the car!) any suggestions?

I think all the ones I have seen, with a mechanial pump, had to grind the head a little to make room for the pump. I have heard you have to be carefull, that you don't grind to far, into the head. Not sure what to far is?

As for right now,it's the RobbMc pump,or nothing. There is someone that is developing another pump, which is much more slender, and I hope to try one this spring.
The Edelbrock head can be clearanced, but you will be real close to the water,so it is best to have the head off, machine right into the water jacket, then weld that area.

I think I'd stick w/ the electric pump, don't like the idea of cutting on expensive aluminum heads. Only my opinion, ofcourse. I've always used Mallory pumps, they're alittle more expensive, but I've never had one fail and they run smoother than any pump I've ever owned or run on any car, or truck. If installed properly, I'd trust a Mallory electric as much or more than a mechanical anyday. I understand your concern, I love my family as much as anyone on the earth. Good Luck.

Can I ask why you don't trust the electric?

I'm running a Barry Grant 220HR pump. I didn't want the noise of a cheap Holley pump. I choose this pump because it was quiet and rated for continuous duty. It has been on the car for probably 13 years (one factory rebuild) I have had problems since the first day with the pump losing prime after a hard stop. Unless the tank is at least 1/3 to maybe 1/4 full one moderate stop the fuel sloshes to the front of the tank, the pump runs quiet (no fuel) and thats it. I originally had the pump tucked up behind the bumper (maybe 3 inches above the tank sump, connected with a section of #10 hose 14 inches long). I have since fabricated a bracket to mount the pump directly to the sump, I REALLY don't like the pump being unprotected like that!I guess it was OK when I raced this car every weekend, I'm older now and the wife and kids enjoy just driving in it. I'm really hoping to take the car on Power Tour this year, no way I'm driving cross country with this pump.

OK, I understand. Barry Grants are not favored by many. Most guys I know running them have wound up buying two of them and keep a spare pump in the trailer. I use Magna Fuel.

I figured with the success of their Demon carb line they would have had their fuel pump program together! Guess not. Does anyone in readerland have any opinions on good QUIET electric pumps? The car is already plumbed for #10 feed and return lines with a sump. I would like one that is forgiving of momentary fuel starvation (like when on the brakes hard!) Thanks!

Mallory are good pumps and fairly quiet.
