"Fa" Block question

My block has a "GST" under the ID code. Anything meaningful or maybe another mystery? Thanks. By the way it's a '76 block with no Z-bar hole.

Dan,

Glad you asked this.....it was bugging me all weekend, but I couldn't remember if it was CST or GST.

take care,

No respones, eh? This one is bugging me. For them to actually cast those letters in there under the casting number means they had to cast a number of them....wouldn't make sense to cast that in there for just one or two.....but I've got no idea what the heck it means. I've done acronym searches and nothing really relates to GST other than a government tax on things in Canada. I really thought someone on here would know this one.

take care,
bob

It's a mystery for sure. I believe the engine or block came from a Delta 88 or 98.

I have a block that I believe was installed in a boat new. It has odd letters and numbers stamped where the vin would normally be. I've got another one that looks like it had "X"'s stamped over the vin number. Then one I used to have and sold to another member here had two numbers stamped on the pad. So..... I think there are a few odd things that were done over the years! John

I pulled one out of the local junkyard about 12years ago like that, but at the time, nobody knew what it was,and I never followed up on it.I robbed the crank out of it & scrapped the rest. The block had sat there too long,& one of the many cold winters froze & cracked it real bad all the way to the deck.I still have no idea what the GST stands for.
I dropped off a few items at the locak machine shop last friday,& there was a complete J-headed 455 there that a young kid just dropped off.It was an Fa block, and no z-bar mount.Nice clean running core though.

Dan,

Your question is a real stumper. I was thinking maybe Olds farmed out some 455 engine casting to a different foundry at some point before they phased out the 455....but I really don't know. Probably stands for "Gots Some Torque".

Bob, Yeah I'm hoping for lots of torque when finished. Wish it wasn't so cold in the garage, need to finish it soon.

Whoops! I realize I logged on and replied to this thread without seeing the photo. I was thinking of a stamp in the vin pad, didn't realize this was something cast into the block. This is a lot more out of the ordinary!

Here's a thought, what about "Green Sand Technology" ?

Its just a guess, but maybe they switched their casting sand from a petrol-bonded sand to a water-bonded "Green Sand"... wasn't there some sort of oil crisis back then... lol. I could see how they might want to identify which blocks were cast with a new process, it would kinda make sense.
