Which exhaust system

What system have you used and how did it fit. I am getting ready to install the exhaust in my chassis (1970 442 Convertible) and am trying to figure out which system, Magniflow, Flowmaster or one of the others, aluminized or stainless. Or am I better off to have it custom made at a local shop? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks Dave E

I've read good things about Pypes systems in fact I bought one based on that. Yet to install. Only input I can say is my bro-in-law installed a Pypes system on his 63 Chevy truck and was pleased with how well it went together.

I'm running the "yellow box store" house brand 2 1/2" system on my 72 Supreme. The fit is poor.

I have a friend who is running the same system on his 68 Chevelle and said it fit just as bad.

I've only heard that Gardiner makes fine reproduction exhaust systems. I got the exhaust system for my '68 4-4-2 from Brothers Automotive Products. I had to do a little extra bending on the driver side exhaust pipe (manifold to muffler) to make it fit right. The sound is good.

Go to the Clubhouse section and look at the 68 cutlass video. I have a Flowmaster 2 1/2 inch system I got from summit. It is pre bent. All you have to do is weld or clamp the whole thing down. It comes with the front pipes either for headers (cut to lenght) or full to the exhaust manifolds. I recommend this system highly. I also used the ball/joint flange instead of the standard flat flange for a leak free system. Watch the video. The car sounds really nice. I have trumpets exiting the rear of the car.

I just installed a Gardner system on my 70 Cutlass S - it fit very well. Good clearance at the transmission cross-brace and at the rear of the frame. No hand forming required, but the body isn't on the frame so I can't say yet if it's a perfect fit. The head pipes and tail pipes are single pieces so no welding is required. Can't speak to the sound, my engine isn't running yet. The Gardner system is a bit pricey compared to others.

There are some pictures in my "Green Mo-sheen Project" thread if you're interested.

Gardner system is highly recommended by several people on this site. Idas 442 has used it and loves it.

X3 for the Gardner system.Pricey, installed without a hitch. Hope to fire her up late next week [if the carb shows up from Sparkys] and be able to hear what it sounds like.

I used the 3" system from Pypes with SpinTech mufflers. Went together nicely and sounds good. Had to trim the forward pieces to fit, because of the X-pipe, but otherwise just bolted together.
