This is a stock replacement part for many GM engines ....so would it be reasonable to assume that it would hold together for an occasional 5,000 rpm blast? .....sorry, also which is a better part for just cruising around and again an occasional full throttle run. A cast iron or aluminum water pump .......... thanks

 

Im sure the dorman is a fine unit, i used the DAYCO PB1147N Premium. Its about the same price and to me the dayco name intimates its a better quality part....

On water pumps, rumor has it that aluminum housings can deteriorate and develop leaks if not driven regularly. It's the pull of the belts on the nose. I'd stick with the parts store replacement pumps if the car isn't driven much and you're not looking for the aluminum bling.

 

Ranger/oddball ...... I bought the Dayco PB1147N Premium, paid $76 shipped....good deal, thanks Ranger. I 'll be using the flow cooler 1776 alum. pump which is the 5.65" unit. It will only have one belt on it driving the water pump and alternator, will use a Spahl elec. puller fan. thanks for the info.........Dave

 

I had the dorman but had a weird vibration at highway speed, I just changed it to a higher cost unit, 250 bucks, but it not only took away that vibration but it even seems to idle better.

 

I would use caution in relying on Dorman's application list. For example, they claim it fits Oldsmobile from 1964-1980. The 1964 330 motors have a unique TDC mark location and will not interchange with balancers of other years (unless you scribe a new timing mark on the balancer for that motor).

 

Yes my new balancer is a fluid damper model, big bucks but it is worth it. Vibrations can shake an engine apart if left long enough.

 

What about the 330 motors that had the counter weight and no actual balancer? I have one off a 67 330.

 

Just an update, and headsup for anyone looking, I received the Dayco balancer today, glad Retroranger recommended them. VERY nice piece, the machine work is excellent.
