Do I need to use the valley pan?/Oil lifter baffle
Do I need to use the turkey tray/Valley pan on a olds 455? Thought I read somewhere that it wasn needed. Im using a performance products crosswind intake. Also where can I find a oil lifter baffle?

Yeah, the factory regularly installed parts that weren't needed... ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
The factory metal tray keeps oil off the bottom of the intake. I've used it with not problems on stock iron, stock aluminum, and aftermarket aluminum intakes. Unless you have oversize ports, I would recommend using it. I have to laugh at aftermarket companies that try to convince you to use composition gaskets and THEN want you to buy a separate lifter baffle. The factory setup does both with one part.

As far as I know that is the factory correct baffle. When I disassembled my 455 it had the pictured baffle and a turkey tray. I reinstalled the baffle but didn't install a turkey tray gasket under the intake manfiold.

Joe, Seems that topic went from the baffle to the turkey tray. You were referring to the turkey tray when you said to use it, yes? Thanks.

I would use it if it came with one. My 350 came with the steel valley pan gasket thing, but no middle baffle as pictured. I hate the aftermarket gasket stuff. They heat up, you have to scrape them off for an hour, clean the surfaces, etc. The factory valley pan... just remove. Simple. I think the water inlet thing at the front should have a steel one also. They are the worst at cleaning - drove me nuts all the time.
Bit off, but on a somewhat related note, do yall recall when you removed the intake manifold for the first time since new (say 20 years later). Do you remember the 'smellll'?
