dip stick

i searched around on older forums and really couldnt find a answer. so in the process of putting headers on i had to take the dipstick out of course. it looks like it broke at the lip that holds the stick in place. im wondering if anyone has any advice on extracting it. i know i could just punch it through but i was hoping maybe to pull the piece out so i dont have to fish it out of the pan.

You can easily pull it out by putting a sheet metal screw into the tube and then using some sort of a puller on the screw to pull the broken part of the tube out of the block.

The last time I did this, I got under the car and used a hammer and long screwdriver to tap the screw upwards as I didn't have a puller handy.

Your next hurdle will be locating a replacement tube. Contact Chris Witt (Octania) as he has a part number list of which tubes go with which sticks.

Remove the starter, and work under the car. Once the screw has a good bite on the broken tube it comes out with a couple light taps with a hammer.

I got a screw in good enough to get it out but couldn't muscle it out for some reason. Tackling it first thing in the morning. I'm just glad I'm not going fishing in a oil pan. Thanks for the knowledge as always

I've done this a bunch of times. A slide hammer is by far the easiest way to get the stump out. I've made a small tool that is a properly sized sheet metal screw welded head-to-head with a bolt that fits the end of the slide hammer.
