custom length plug wires

hey guys,

what would be a decent DIY spark plug wire set?

engine is a 461 with ignitor III and flame thrower III coil. installed the R&M wire looms and now i need custom length plug wires.

already have the MSD mini stripper / crimper. need black wires as well...don't really wanna go with blue or red...or even yellow (eeew)

I'm partial to Taylor for the finger nubbins on the plug end. I've used MSD, Pertronix, and at least one other type. All the crimp ends were comparable. I wouldn't bother with more than 8mm unless there's a real good reason. Straight boots for OEM heads, 45deg for Edelbrock. Do get resistance wires unless you have a good reason for race wires. No need for ceramic plug ends on Olds or heat wrap.

If you haven't crimped ignition wires before, be prepared to buy extra ends. Every crimper I have (3, cheap and expensive, manual and ratcheting) tends to crunch the ear that's closer to the open end of the crimper instead of folding it correctly.

The Accel 8.8 25 ohm/ft race wires are really nice but are red. Get the MSD Super Conductor wires in black, although they don't like extreme heat as much. I had #1 crack twice when I had over heating issues.

I used a set of moroso race wires last and liked them a lot!! They were cut to fit and went together easily!

Myself after using MSD, I like the Taylor wires. Much easier to work with and the boots are easier to slide on and off the plugs in tight spaces.

I've been use Taylor Spiro-pro's for years. Good quality and inexpensive, comparatively.

I used to have Taylors on my 98. When I returned from Afghanistan I replaced them with the Jegs brand wires. They work great and are cheaper too.
