Carb question

I have a stock 69 455. I am considering a holley avenger PART# 0-83770. I am wondering if weight is really the only difference between the aluminum and zinc housings, and do these bolt up to stock intakes, or do I need an adapter, or new intake? Finally, I assume if I get electric choke, i can just run a new wire for it?

The stock intake manifold is a spread bore, a Holley Avenger is a square bore carb, so yes you need an adapter or a new intake. The Carb you spec'd is only a 670cfm, while the Rochester that came stock was rated a lot higher. I would go with a bigger carb. Why do you want to change?

The one I meant to show was a 770cfm. I hoped it would also work well if I built the engine a bit later.

I have been unable to get my qjet to run right. Out if ideas.

It’s hard to beat a GOOD Q-Jet. What’s wrong with it, what have you done with it? If the carb isn’t calibrated correctly for the application, no amount of tinkering with it will make it right. Get with a actual Q-Jet expert, get the proper rebuild kit and the parts needed to tune it to your engine. Have as much info on hand when you order parts, the more detail you can provide, the better the calibration will be.

The Q-Jet will probably run better, get better mileage, and will be cheaper than a new Holley

Sorry but that’s just simply not true in most cases.
I’ve had almost a half dozen of the ”Qjet expert” carbs on the dyno. Not one, I repeat not one was even close to being jetted correctly. Some were way too rich, some we couldn’t get rich enough.
Buy a new style carb (Quick Fuel, Brawler etc.) with changeable air bleeds etc and a wideband. I promise you with a little tuning it’ll give you the performance you expect and competitive efficiency as compared to a Qjet.

Are any of those bolt on, or is a new intake or adapter inevitable?

Edelbrock makes an inexpensive thin plate that will cover the spread bore pattern

Follow up question

I purchased a new holley carb and the adapter plate. Anybody have some thoughts on remounting the throttle cable bracket? It doesnt fit the square bore bolt pattern.

Is there a different bracket available or should I modify this one? Just looking for ideas or experience.

Thanks, Bob

You can mod that one or buy a universal one that will work. There are all kinds of brackets out there.
