Cam specs question...

When I bought my U code '72 Supreme, I was told it has a W30 cam, but the PO didn't have the specs.

Well, he found the spec sheet and turns out it's not a W30, but is it W30 specs?

There were five different camshafts used in W30 motors between 1966-72. None of them match that aftermarket cam.

Same person who said they changed the rear differential fluid? Couldn't help myself, Dave.

Your cam card shows specs that are between the 1970 W-30 synchro (402569) and 1971-2 W-30 synchro (409759) but much closer to the milder 71-72 version.

That’s the generic 224/234 grind available from multiple cam companies.

So would it be safe to say that it's more aggressive than the stock cam but not as aggressive as the '70--72 W30 cam? Or, where does it place compared to the '70-'72 W30 cam?

Go back and look at my chart. Your cam is 300/310 with 81 deg overlap and .496"/.520" lift. It is less than the 70 W30 MT cam but more than the 70 W30 AT cam. 71-72 are less aggressive. On the other hand, yours has more lift, so total valve curtain area would need to be compared. If anything that's close to the 66-67 cam, but again with more lift. You'd also want to compare lobe separation angle. Olds factory cams tend to have a pretty wide LSA.

The CS198 cam is in the Speed Pro Performance catalog. The description says:

Cam Series: Pro 3000 Idle Quality: Fair Power range: 2500-5500

Doesnt really mean much but figured I would add it to the conversation

Correct. And a BAD choice if it has the stock comp ratio.

Lazy lobes, comparatively speaking by todays standards. And the wide lobe sep will stretch the power band. You want to build Cyl pressure earlier not later, cuz you have a low static comp ratio.

I'm not all that savvy on the ins and outs of cam lingo and technology, but I do know that with an Edelbrock performer intake, a Holley 770 Street Avenger, .030 bore and headers, it's got a lot of pull off the line, and it's pretty snappy on the high end as well. I guess the PO did his homework.

So it has a different piston in it, that’ll make a difference.
