C heads

Hey big block guys. About 20 years ago I was at a local salvage yard and the owner said something like "Hey you're a Olds guy, you want to buy 2 sets of C heads?". I didn't even know what they were but he said they were desirable high performance heads. They were removed and someone had sold them to him. I bought them and still have them. My question is how do I know what they are? Are there big and small valve versions? What are they worth? Would it be worth it for me to have them magnafluxed to make sure no cracks, etc. Thanks Greg.

Hey Greg, yes they do come in two flavors large & small valve. Grab your Verniers and check the OD on both intake & exhaust & compare these to either 2.000" or 2.072" inch for int, with all exhaust at 1.625"...assuming they're untouched from original. If they are 67 look for numbers stamped in one end which indicates engine ID

They are not high performance heads, they are simply factory heads from 1967-69. Some say they are the best factory heads, I suppose they are......right along with A and B heads.

They came in two varieties, one had big intake valves (2.07) and small valves (2.00).

You are asking what they are? They are C heads......you already know that

Basically, big block heads were designated from the factory by a letter. Heads from 1970 were E heads, 71 were G heads, and 72 were Ga heads. D, F, and H heads were on W-30 models.

The value as cores are around $40-$250 (for the pair) depending on the person.

In my neck of the woods there is a shop who charges $80 for checking for cracks, resurface, and clean/tumble the heads so they are down to virgin cast iron.......which is a spectacular price by the way. Your shop may vary.

Thanks guys. Brett, I think I asked you about these a while back but I had forgotten what to check. I am pretty sure I won't be using these. I wrote it down this time and this spring when I get the cars out I will check out 'em out. Maybe I could trade them to you for some other stuff I could use...?
