anyone with Aluminum heads ever run into this problem with the C and H alternator brackets? The crank, power steering and Vintage Air all lineup perfectly but the alternator is one groove back from perfect. The alternator is from Autozone and is new and was correct part number for that year according to their system. The belt does go on but squeels back and eventually gets chewed.
did the stock C and H bracket need a spacer behind between the bracket and heads OR did the 1970 Olds 442 with 455 have a Dual groove pulley originally? That seems to be only immediate solution so I went ahead and ordered one.

A single groove pulley is correct, and while it is dimensionally the same, that is not the correct alternator for a 1970 442. There should not be any spacers required.
I have aluminum heads, Vintage Air, and everything lined up on my car. I don’t recall what pulleys I used, but they are the correct codes for a 69 with factory air.
Im using a CS-130 series alternator. The original application had a serpentine belt pulley. I transferred all the v belt hardware and pulleys from the old alternator to the CS part, everything lined up.
Wish I could be more helpful. Was this a factory air car you converted to Vintage Air? If so, did everything line up before? If this is a new conversion, I’d suspect wrong water pump (with the matching but incorrect pulleys).
I’m using the same alternator brackets you are. I think the ones Joe posted are technically the correct parts for the 68-69 cars, but dimensionally I think the function the same.
ill be taking apart my car soon for a water pump replacement. If you haven’t found a answer to your problem I’ll report back with the pulley codes I’m using.

P/N 398667 front bracket and 398887 rear brace are the same for all 68-71 A/C cars, according to the parts book.

Is hub on water pump set deep enough, power steering belt looks like it could go back too
I think i may have found problem. The bottom back H bolt hole is under the head ARP bolt. The original head bolt had a stud. Here are OEM bolts. The rear bolt would give the alternator bracket a little more height and push the bracket forward. Which Of these bolts is right one to replace the ARP bolt?

At first glance, it looked like the OP was using the later model alternator brackets, like what was on the mid 70s cars. After you posted the part numbers I looked closer and could see that they were the correct A body parts. That was my mistake.
Well. I guess since BOTH the C/H and later 70s brackets both put the alternator in same place I have something else going on. The Power Steering pulley has correct spacers on back and lines up perfect M with WP and Crank
i found a Dual groove pulley and installed it and now all the belts are
!
