Bottom of cylinder chipped

Hello everyone, I don't have a lot posts but love the site and all the knowledge it contains from you guys. I purchased a 455 to replace my 330 and noticed this chip on the bottom of cylinder. It's a good 2 inches below the oil ring. Is this still a usable block, a casting defect or catastrophic? The piston on that cylinder shows no damage. Thank you for the help.

That shouldn't be a problem.

Have your block magna fluxed before you put any money into it. If you wanted, you could then grind that over smoothly.

Thank you guys for the quick response. Was worried it could have bad affects. Will take the advice and get it magnafluxed before I get new bearings pistons rings and gaskets. Don't see anything from the eye as far as cracks go hopefully same goes for the magnaflux. Really looking forward to building this for my 66 cutlass.

Any ideas on what could cause that to happen? The rods look good and bearings didn't look super worn or pitted. Even the piston skirt from that cylinder didn't show any scars or marks.

That could have happened along time ago. It probably got hit with force from something harder, like during assembly or initial machining.

It could have happened during its recent tear down.
