Big Blocks!

Are all internals (crank, rods) on 400 and 455 engines interchangeable? 455 cranks and rods in a summit catalog, will they fit a 400? I just want to be sure before I make a costly purchase. Thanks for any info!

big blocks

Thanks 501! Ive heard that the 68-69 400's werent as good as the 66-67's. Would an Eagle crank and aftermarket rods make a 68-69 400 comparable to a 66-67 400 or is the difference between 66-67 400's and 68-69 400's in the block itself? Im looking to either build a 400 or 455 for my 68 442 converible,Ide like about 400 hp but would like it to run on pump gas. I am just gathering info before I start buying parts. Thanks again.

My experience is in locating the parts to restore the 400 engine in mine I'm sure others could give better advice regarding 66-67 vs. 68-69 400's HP and such.

If I had to do it all again...I would have stored the #'s matching 400 put my C heads on a rebuilt 455 w/forged pistons.
I had a hard time finding pistons for the 400 under 800.00 I went with Egge cast aluminum ones for around 500.00, Eagle Rods, Stock Nodular crank and mild Crane Cam.

I have been told the Stock crank is very good so save some cash and put it into the pistons and the heads.

Good luck.

The downside of the 68/69 400 is the small bore. You might want to conatct Bill Trovato at BTR Performance. He did a nice 69 W30 400 engine a few years back, for a concours restoration, but I know there were a few tricks inside.

The 65-67 400 motors used a 4.00 bore and 3.98 stroke. Rods are 7.00". The crank and rods are common with those in the 425 from those years.

The 68-69 400 motors used a 3.87 bore and a 4.25 stroke. Rods are 6.735". The crank and rods are common with those in the 455.
