Best Mechanical Fuel Pump 455

Can I get some recommendations on mechanical fuel pumps?

Need enough to supply for 455 at 500 HP.

Will be adding dual inlet for the Holley Carb, but want to leave fuel lines alone behind the pump to the gas tank.

Would like to forego the the external fuel pressure regulator as well.

Is possible with the right pump that bolts in stock location?

Does addition of Edelbrock aluminum heads play into this equation?

Thank you.

I have that pump on my 455, with Edelbrock heads, and I hammered on the edge of the pump a little at a time in a vice, until it would fit. I figured that was safer than cutting into the heads.

A small electric pump back by the tank is wise, for racing, feeding the gas to the mechanical. It also can fill the carb with gas faster if it is dry.

A friend of mine has one on his 66 455 powered cutlass, car runs 12:20s with no problem
Pretty respectable for a 40 dollar pump.

I'm in the market for a new pump. This thread worked out perfect timing wise. The old chrome holley pump is only showing 3 psi at 4k rpm. Just a mid 12 sec street sbo so if it works for the bbo should for the sbo.

The edelbrock heads were not made with clearance for the mechanical pumps.

On Ebay for less, with free shipping out of Kansas US $27.49

Its OK. Have a good day and enjoy that big pump. Its a doozie. People have reported 7 to 8 pounds of pressure with these.

Are we still talking about the Airtex 40736? Thanks.

If that's right sounds perfect for my situation. David

Yes sir we are, or I am and it should be perfect for most. I still recommend a small boost electric at the tank along the lines of the Holley street pump, to feed any mechanical pump for drag racing. If I remember right, the electric doesn't even have to be on for the mechanical to pull fuel right though the electric, with it off, for normal driving fuel demands.

Awhile back I used a holley red street pump hooked up under my hood temporarily, to pull fuel out of my tank and right through a different style of holley electric pump that was off, for my Holley injection. So if mechanical is not enough...

But that is a good size powerful mechanical
