Question Adjusting engine speed

Thanks for taking a look... and I apologize for my basic question. When setting the timing, and you are asked to increase the engine speed to... let's say, 3k rpm. How do you do that? Do you just hold the throttle open so the engine is running at the desired rpm? How do you adjust the engine speed when setting the timing? Thanks! I have a '68 455 with a 4 bbl Qjet.

There is a screw adjustment on the throttle cable. I holds the carb open or close. In faster, out slower. You are not going to set it at 3K , to ckeck any thing. OK to rev the engine up to high RPM, but don't leave it rev at hight RPM for long time. You should get a good Olds repair manual. It will show you where all the addjustments are. Also if you have old cars, these manuals will help you with so many htings, almost a must, especilly when learning. You can learn a lot from theses books
