72 cam ?

Does anybody know what cam would be in a 72 U code Cutlass. Is it the same as the 442? The U code car is a 455 I'm just curious what camshaft is in it.

My information shows 3 camshafts for 72.

1. Part number 400165 which was the same as 70 365 hp engine.

2. Part number 409759 = L77 W30.

3. Part number 402569 which was the W30 camshaft from 1969 to 1972.

Hopefully this will help you out.

Here are the descriptions I find for the 1972 455 cams, arranged by performance (most powerful listed last)...
400117 -- 455 4BC AT
409691 -- 455 L75 ST, L77 AT
409759 -- 455 F-85, 455 ST OAI (W-30)

Logically, I would think you have the 400117.

If Kenneth see this thread, he will give us a positive ID.

#3 P/N 402569 was the W-30 cam 1968-1970. This is the 328/328 degree cam.

U-code cams would be consistent across the model lines.

This s the correct info. All 1972 455s (including full size and Toro) got 400117 except for V-code and X-code cars.

Thank you all for the information
Are the springs the same across all the 455's or did the manual transmission or w-30 get stiffer

Don't know that OP was looking for a cam ... he just wanted to know what he had.
