71 455 Carb Question
71 455 Carb Question
Hey guys....need some help. I've got a 68 cutlass with a 71 455.
First, what manual is the best to get with this setup? I already have all the 68 manuals but with the 71 motor should I get the 71 chassis or assembly manual? Or maybe both? Or is there something else you would recommend.
Second, I just got my hands on a 7041251 carb to replace the 73 Pontiac carb that is currently on it and I have a question on the new carb. On the back just below the compensator cover there is a hole in the base plate (bottom center of carb in pic). The one on the Pontiac carb was plugged. Should this be plugged and if not what is it for?
Thanks in advance!!

that threaded hole in the throttle body is a manifold vacuum connection. it can be used for the brake booster, or other devices requiring manifold vacuum. pontiacs tended to use a vacuum tree(of various configurations) which was threaded in to that opening. if you don't need it, plug it with a pipe plug using teflon tape or a sealer applied to the threads.
it wouldn't hurt to have a '71 csm. do you NEED one-probably not.

Appreciate the feedback but my carb issues have long been resolved. I ended up just plugging the hole.
